GST Calculation Formulas

Adding GST (GST Exclusive)

When you have the price before GST:

  • GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate / 100)
  • Total Price = Original Price + GST Amount
  • Simplified: Total Price = Original Price × (1 + GST Rate / 100)

Removing GST (GST Inclusive)

When you have the total price including GST:

  • Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
  • GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

Common GST Rates

Rate Applicable Items
0% Essential items like fresh food, healthcare
5% Household necessities, packaged food items
12% Processed food, computers, mobile phones
18% Most goods and services, electronics
28% Luxury items, automobiles, tobacco

Understanding CGST and SGST

For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally:

  • CGST (Central GST): Half of total GST goes to central government
  • SGST (State GST): Half of total GST goes to state government

For inter-state transactions:

  • IGST (Integrated GST): Full GST amount goes to central government

Practical Examples

Example 1: Adding GST

Product price: ₹1,000 (before GST) GST rate: 18%

  • GST Amount = ₹1,000 × 18% = ₹180
  • Total Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180

Example 2: Extracting GST

Total paid: ₹1,180 (including GST) GST rate: 18%

  • Base Price = ₹1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000
  • GST Amount = ₹1,180 - ₹1,000 = ₹180
