About Ratio Simplifier Calculator
What is a Ratio Simplifier Calculator?
A Ratio Simplifier Calculator reduces a ratio to its lowest terms by finding and dividing by the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). This creates an equivalent ratio with the smallest possible whole numbers while maintaining the same relationship between quantities.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your ratio values in the input fields
- Toggle 3-part ratio if you need to simplify ratios like 2:4:6
- View instant results showing the simplified ratio
- Review the breakdown to understand the GCD calculation
Understanding the Simplification Process
The GCD Algorithm
The Greatest Common Divisor (GCD), also known as the Greatest Common Factor (GCF), is the largest positive integer that divides each number in the ratio without a remainder.
Euclidean Algorithm:
gcd(a, b) = gcd(b, a mod b) when b ≠ 0
gcd(a, 0) = a
Example: Simplify 24:36
- Find GCD(24, 36) = 12
- Divide each by GCD: 24÷12 = 2, 36÷12 = 3
- Simplified ratio: 2:3

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the simplest form of a ratio?
The simplest form is when the numbers in the ratio share no common factors other than 1. For example, 3:4 is in simplest form, but 6:8 is not.
Can I simplify ratios with decimals?
Yes! First multiply all parts to remove decimals, then find the GCD. For 0.5:1.5, multiply by 2 to get 1:3.
What about ratios with more than 2 parts?
This calculator supports 3-part ratios. The GCD is found for all three numbers: GCD(a, b, c) = GCD(GCD(a, b), c).
How is this different from simplifying fractions?
The process is the same! A ratio a:b can be written as the fraction a/b. Simplifying both uses the GCD.
Tip: Always check your simplified ratio by multiplying back. If 12:16 simplifies to 3:4, then 3×4=12 and 4×4=16 confirms the answer.
